Surfskating for beginners: the essentials you need

Have you been thinking about catching the concrete wave but don't know how to start? Hang on, we've got you covered! We've put together this short series of videos on the essentials when you're first starting out with surfskate.

What is a surfskate?

Yes, perhaps we should start by explaining what a surf skate is. In the video, Gregor shows you a standard board and compares it to a surf skate to paint the picture of what you are about to start.

The truth is that surf skate is a very different experience from traditional longboards or skateboards. So give yourself some time to get used to the board, even if you already know how to ride on the side. One thing to remember, as our noob Siana said: "Stay calm and stay away from the rocks, they hurt!

To start: get on the board

With surf skate, there are a few important guidelines when you are about to get on your board. The specific truck system and the way it moves affects how you should position yourself on the board and how you start it.

Go further by pumping the board

Surf skates are also very different in the way you move and gain speed. Rather than pushing, you "pump" your way forward and normally speed is not what you are aiming for. The goal here is to get the maximum surfing sensation.

Tips for stopping safely

Ok, you've managed to get on the board, ride it, but you also need to know the best way to stop it (and not do like our beginner and end up in the grass). Because of the unique truck system of the surfboard, you can't really stop the same way you would on a longboard or skateboard. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to learn how to stop, check out how to do it here
